Smoking Addiction

Smoking addiction is quite common despite the fact that the dangers of cigarettes are well known. The problem is that smoking is so addictive that almost everybody who smokes will eventually become an addict. Given this the smartest thing to do is to not start smoking at all. Unfortunately for many people it is too late for this so they are going to have to find a way to deal with their addiction.

This occurs because nicotine is a drug and it acts like any other drug in that is affects your brain chemistry. There are of course lots of good reasons that you would want to quit smoking and everybody is well aware of them. The list of diseases that can be caused by cigarettes range from cancer to heart disease with a lot of others in between. There is also the expense of smoking and the social stigma. In addition most cities have introduced laws that restrict where and when you can smoke which makes life difficult for people who have smoking addiction and find themselves some place where they can't smoke. The best solution would be to just stop smoking.

While most people would like to stop smoking it is not easy to do. Most people rely solely on will power to help them quit, which is a big part of why they have a problem. There are real physical symptoms to giving up cigarettes and it is difficult to overcome these without help. This is why things like nicotine patches and gum have become such a popular option. The will allow you to replace the nicotine so that you can stop smoking without the physical symptoms and then all you have to do is slowly wean yourself from the nicotine supplement by reducing the dosage.

Most people who are trying to quit smoking also find that it is beneficial for them if they have somebody to help them. Support groups are a popular option for this; usually it is easier to quit smoking if you are around others who are doing the same thing. It is also a good idea to keep a log of when you have a craving for a cigarette so that you can look at what was going on at the time and address the reason that you wanted a cigarette. This will help you to get to the root of why you smoke which should help you to quit.
